Money Monster: Jodie Foster

While Jodie Foster's Money Monster isn't that good, I was actually very surprised that it was as good as it was. I'll always be suspicious of filthy rich Hollywood stars making populist movies about the evils of Wall Street--the fact that Adam McKay's The Big Short (2015) was one of the best films of the decade was nothing short of gob-smacking--but where Money Monster shines is in how it constantly surprised me. Whenever I felt like I had figured out where it was going, it turned around and ruined my expectations. An inspirational scene with an inspirational speech by George Clooney asking people to buy terrible stocks to save his life ending with the stock actually decreasing in value? The bomber's pregnant girlfriend showing up and emasculating him on national television? I actually like how cynical these twists were. But they were still a far cry from making this feel like anything other than a rich-liberal-guilt movie. I wish it had been as cold and detached as a 70s political thriller.
