Justin Bieber, amid all the recent speculation that he's done with celebrity life, put on a happy face on Monday and let himself sink into the forlorn steel guitar of Taylor Swift's "Teardrops on my Guitar," while filming the whole thing for Instagram. He looks content in the video.
The song choice is a weird one, though since Taylor and Justin haven't been on good terms since Bieber's rocky relationship with Swift's best friend Selena Gomez ended. But since Swift liked the video on Instagram on Monday night, does this mean that they're closing the gap on their beef?
Let's go back and revisit a time when Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift were buddies, and understand how things got so weird:
Nov. 24 + 25, 2009 — Bieber opened for Swift on two U.K. dates of the Fearless World Tour. He broke his foot performing "One Time" at the Wembley, but he was able to finish the song. It's an incredible feat, if you think about it, and backstage, Swift helped explain to his YouTube followers what went down.
Aug. 7, 2011 — Justin and Taylor danced along to Selena Gomez's performance of "Love You Like A Love Song" at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards. Justin and Selena started dating in 2010, and by that time, Jelena was official.
Aug. 23, 2011 — Swift invited Bieber to sing "Baby" on her Speak Now Tour stop at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The stage chemistry was super-cute.
Nov. 20, 2011 — They seemed to be having a good time at the 2011 American Music Awards, when T. Swift third-wheeled her friends and hung out with them all night.
Feb. 22, 2012 — With partner-in-crime Zac Efron, Taylor danced up on an un-knowing Bieber in a clip for Ellen.
March 29, 2012 — Bieber pranked Swift on an episode of Punk'd, making her think that she blew up a wedding on a boat. I'm guessing that this wasn't a good move for their relationship.
May 19, 2013 — This is where Taylor's thoughts on Justin take a turn. Backstage at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, she stuck out her tongue in visible disgust as BFF Gomez went in for a kiss with Justin. Jelena were in the middle of their long-term, on-again-off-again relationship and had already broken up a few times.
Feb. 26, 2015 — Justin took on Taylor's "Shake It Off" with zest while playing a humming song with Ellen DeGeneres.
May 23, 2016 — Bieber, after being accused of throwing out a fan's gift earlier in the day, posted a video of himself lip-syncing Taylor's "Teardrops on my Guitar," from her 2006 debut. And what do you know? Swift double-tapped the photo.
Bieber and his friend taped another Instagram video, with the opening notes of "Teardrops," playing in the background. They reference "Drew," a.k.a. the guy Taylor sings about in the opening lines of the song: "Drew looks / at me / I fake a smile so he won't see."
The best part? Justin's middle name: Drew.
What does this mean for their friendship? No clue, but it looks like maybe they are getting closer to burying the hatchet.
