Visit This A New Kyoto Hotel, Complete With Its Own ForestImage ![]() By The Aman hotel group has long upheld the Japanese architectural principle that buildings should be in harmony with their natural environments, but that thinking is especially evident at its latest location — a secluded eight-acre garden-within-a-forest at the base of Kyoto's Mount Hidari Daimonji. "It's all about the grounds," said the designer, Justin Hill, which are accessed via an ancient copper gate and include a large main lawn, naturally occurring streams and moss-covered stone walkways surrounded by dense plots of Japanese maple and cedar trees. They encompass 11 slatted stained-cedar pavilions housing 24 rooms and two two-bedroom suites between them. Inside, the structures allude to a classic ryokan, with tatami mats, orb-shaped lanterns, hinoki tubs and tokonoma, or wall niches, here used to display local pottery. The hotel restaurant serves kaiseki, seasonal multicourse meals, and guests can experience other local customs by soaking in the open-air onsen or venturing past the garden's edge for meditative hikes known as shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. aman.com Wear This Shoes to Get You Through Holiday-Party SeasonBy In my experience, the key to juggling end-of-year obligations — from office parties to gatherings with friends — is wearing something you'll be comfortable in as you rush from one thing to the next. And you won't have to compromise on style if you find a good evening slipper, be it a flat mule or a pair of furlanes. The Row makes a beautiful soft suede version accented with mismatched gems, while the London-based label Le Monde Beryl — a line of Venetian gondolier-inspired slippers founded in 2015 — offers an array of different colors and styles; my favorite is the velvet ankle-strap shoe, which comes in black, blush pink and brick red. For a lower-priced option, check out Drogheria Crivellini, an Italian heritage label that was founded in the 1950s (I'm a fan of the Mary Jane style) or the California-based brand Birdies, whose jewel-toned slip-ons would dress up any black-heavy winter wardrobe. Eat This In Berlin, a New (and Tiny) Restaurant of NoteBy Vadim Otto Ursus, the 27-year-old chef behind the newly opened restaurant Otto in Berlin, has an impressive resume that includes a stint at the Michelin-starred Maaemo in Oslo and Noma Mexico in Tulum. But what I find the most compelling about his background is that he grew up in an artists' squat, surrounded by creatives and activists (the building still exists on the German capital's now stylish Auguststrasse). Cooking was an adventure and about community, which explains why eating at Otto, his first restaurant — an intimate space with 16 seats and a tiny bar situated in the buzzy neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg — feels like being at the best kind of Berlin house party. Otto already has a growing crowd of regulars, including Ursus's mother, the conceptual artist Meggie Schneider, who often brings over jars of pickles and bouquets of wildflowers from the German countryside. The à la carte menu is concise and exceptional, especially the hand-caught barbecued smoky trout, served with a salad of foraged greens and herbs, and the dessert, raw-milk ice cream served with pickled elderberries and an oil made from the pits of plums. otto-berlin.net. Covet This Home Goods That Double as ArtBy For me, decorating a space means oscillating between my desired aesthetic and the bitter reality of its cost — something I'm learning over and over again as I attempt to furnish my new Brooklyn apartment with special yet functional pieces that come without the astronomical prices set by most design galleries. Enter Psultan: a new online home-goods store created by the Paris-based architect Jean-Philippe Sanfourche that offers affordably produced, one-of-a-kind objects finished with an artistic edge. Out now, the debut collection consists of psychedelic ceramic stools handmade by craftsmen on the Italian Amalfi Coast; the terra-cotta seats (originally developed for the fall 2015 Celine runway show) were molded on a traditional pottery wheel in five distinct shapes and then painted with an experimental combination of glazes and oxides in colors including acid green, vibrant amber and marbled cerulean. "Our challenge is to create beautiful and soulful objects using serial production," Sanfourche told me. "We didn't want to make something too precious." From about $1,079, psultan.world. Buy This Essential Eyeliner From a Japanese Beauty BrandBy I recently met Hiroshi Imamura, one of the co-founders of the Japanese beauty brand UZ, at its New York flagship on Howard Street. Imamura (whom some might know as the co-founder of Flowfushi, which created a best-selling mascara in Japan in 2011) likes to break the beauty industry's rules, making products that didn't otherwise exist, or not in the way you expect, blending traditional Japanese craftsmanship with the latest technology. Just last month, UZ launched six super-moisturizing lip glosses packed with prebiotics and Endmineral, an ingredient meant to enhance blood flow to your lips. My favorite products, though, are UZ's eyeliners — sold with brushes handmade in the Kumano and Nara regions (both centers of the traditional Japanese craft of brush-making) — which come in an array of shocking colors, but also in seven different shades of black. They're all subtly different, with hints of red, blue or green. I love to layer UZ's Pitch Black under the slightly shimmery Platinum Black to create the perfect wingtip. From $16, uz.team. | Did LeBron James ‘disrespect’ the Jazz by taking off his shoes? - SB Nation Posted: 05 Dec 2019 04:05 AM PST The Lakers figuratively popped would-be contender Utah in the mouth on Wednesday night. LA beat the Jazz by 25 in Salt Lake. Dwight Howard hit a three in the fourth. The ref missed a shockingly bad travel on LeBron that never actually mattered. Anthony Davis sat the entire fourth, and LeBron played just four minutes of it before retiring for the night. Late in the contest, LeBron was celebrating a step oncourt during play (not really allowed, but this is a blowout, we'll roll with it) and the Jazz broadcast crew noticed King James was doing that wearing just socks on his feet. The analyst called it "disrespect" to go shoeless while the game was still going. First, well yes, LeBron no longer respected Utah's ability to win the game. It was a 20-point game with two minutes left. But there's also a good reason LeBron was no longer wearing his game sneakers. He had just signed and given them away to two young Lakers fans in the building. The announcers likely wouldn't have seen that from their perch, but still, the rush to judgment for something ultimately meaningless (socks are disrespect? we're not talking about flippy bottle, we're talking about socks) is so unnecessary and poisonous. Many more Utahns saw the broadcast team bash LeBron than will see him having given two little Utahns something they'll remember for eternity. And for what? Relax, folks. It's just basketball. | Lions QB Blough to honor Tyler Trent with special shoes - WTHR Posted: 04 Dec 2019 04:57 PM PST ![]() ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — David Blough is ready to honor Tyler Trent with his shoes. Blough, now a quarterback for the Detroit Lions, showed off a special shoe Wednesday with Trent's likeness on it. Trent was the inspirational Purdue fan who died of bone cancer at age 20 on Jan. 1. Blough, who played at Purdue, said he's planning to wear the shoes in Detroit's game at Minnesota this weekend. "I wanted to honor Tyler Trent and his life, obviously a good friend of mine," Blough said. "Really cool deal, some guys put this together for us, so I thought it'd be sweet to be able to honor Tyler and his life with that." Trent was first diagnosed with a rare bone cancer at age 15. He entered Purdue in 2017 while undergoing chemotherapy and received national attention last year by becoming the adopted captain of the football team. Blough was on that Purdue team, then entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie. He made his pro debut last week when he started for the Lions on Thanksgiving against Chicago. He threw touchdown passes on his first two drives, although Detroit lost 24-20. It's safe to say Blough is more well known than he was a couple of weeks ago, so it's a good time for him to honor Trent with his special shoes. "To be able to wear them after last week with all the attention for Tyler is just special," he said. "It brings light to his legacy, his life, his story, what he stood for, and I hope with my actions and play that that can be well represented." Blough's opportunity last week came because of injuries to Matthew Stafford and Jeff Driskel. Stafford has missed the past four games — all losses — with back and hip injuries. Driskel injured his hamstring and is now on injured reserve. Blough's performance against Chicago was all the more impressive because of the short week of preparation leading up to it. Blough will have had a lot more time to get ready for this next game against the Vikings. "It definitely helps. You get all of those reps with the first-team guys and just last week kind of going through the week, the walk-through, things like that," he said. Stafford was also in the Detroit locker room Wednesday. He said his recent injury problems haven't affected his long-term outlook. Suggested Links"I want to play for a long time," Stafford said. "I felt like I was playing really good ball this year, and something that's kind of a freak deal that happened, and obviously got to take it in stride and listen to doctors, my body, coaches, everybody, kind of figure out what's best. But I was having a lot of fun playing when I was out there." NOTES: The Lions signed free agent TE Cole Herdman to the practice squad and released LB Anthony Pittman from the practice squad. Herdman is also an undrafted rookie from Purdue. (Copyright 2019 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.) |
| Less Than 5 Shoe Store will open again Dec. 18 - Grant Tribune Sentinel Posted: 05 Dec 2019 08:12 AM PST Shayne Hite's sixth grade class opened up their Less Than 5 Shoe Store in the elementary school gym Wednesday, Nov. 13. The shoe store offers dress shoes, sport shoes or snow boots all for less than five dollars. Hite attended a workshop last year that discussed students doing passion projects. He thought it would be fun and educational to do one as a class this year, so he shared the information with his students. "We talked about how the coat drive works each year, and they came up with the idea of a shoe store," Hite said. Before the store opening, they had over 100 pairs of boots and shoes. With the continued donations from the community, they have been able to keep over 100 pairs in stock. The sixth graders have sold or given away more than 20 pairs of shoes since their project began. This year's sixth graders hope to pass the store on to next year's sixth graders so they may continue to grow and help the community. In the future they may consider expanding what is offered, such as socks or shoe strings. The store is expanding to an online shop as well. According to Hite, the website is close to being fully up and running, and they are currently entering pictures and updating prices and sizes. Less Than 5 Shoe Store will open again on Dec. 18 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the elementary gym. In the meantime, the website can be found at https://sites.google.com/a/perkinscountyschools.org/mr-hite-s-website/ho.... They are always accepting donations of any shoes in good condition. The only shoes not accepted are open-toed shoes and flip-flops. |
