Trump campaign invites Tupac to VP debate in jab at Kamala Harris

Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller said the team invited the late rapper Tupac Shakur, better known as 2Pac, to the vice presidential debate in Utah as a jab at Democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris, who recently said the artist was the "best rapper alive."

"We have left a ticket for Tupac Shakur, Sen. Harris's favorite rapper alive," Miller told reporters at the end of a press call ahead of the debate. "I'm personally more of a Biggie fan, if he's still alive, [but] we will have a ticket for Tupac."

Harris appeared to be tripped up by a question from CNN commentator Angela Rye at the virtual National Association for the Advancement of Colored People conference on Sept. 25. Rye asked Harris who she thought is the "best rapper alive." Harris said 2pac, who died in 1996, before Rye responded that Tupac "is not alive."

After laughing off the exchange, Rye asked Harris to name another living rapper that she enjoys, but Harris pivoted away from the question, simply stating that there are "some" rappers who she thinks "should stay in their lane." Some have suggested Harris meant to answer 2Pac and was actually leaning into a popular myth that the rapper is still alive.

This is not the first time Harris's recollection of times and dates concerning her entertainment choices have come under scrutiny. Before she joined the Democratic ticket, Harris was accused of lying about her favorite rapper in college during an interview with the Breakfast Club in February 2019.

In the clip, which Reuters claimed had been edited in a misleading way, Harris said she enjoyed listening to rapper Snoop Dogg while in college when the California rapper had yet to release an album.
